This is one of the two car kits I made, we also have a larger backpack kit for our home. I keep trying to picture scenarios where we will actually use these things, and really I can't come up with anything. Our home kit might be a big more necessary during tornado season. We live on the 5th floor of an apartment, so when sirens go off we have to leave our apartment (and tv updates!) and head into the stairwell. If our building collapses on top of us, we'd have the supplies we would need to survive 3 days. Yes, I realize I'm super dramatic. Anyway, I bet you are wondering what is inside of these things huh?!
I purchased a lot of the supplies from this website.
Each car kit has:
-Water boxes or water bottles...pretty much the bare minimum for 3 days, but I plan on keeping a gallon of water in the trunk as well.
-Emergency food bars. Check out the size of this thing! This is a 3 day food supply.

-Formula packets, bottle, tubs of baby food, and baby snacks for Isla.
-3 diapers
-Small pack of wipes
-3 packets of Kleenex
-Hand sanitizer
-3 tampons
-Medium sized emergency kit
-Emergency blankets
-2 cold packs
-1 flashlight (a shake flashlight, not one that requires batteries)
-2 boxes of water proof matches
-4 in 1 tool
-Glow sticks (bigger than mouth size) ;)
-Whistle
-Sunscreen
-A small toy for Isla
In our large backpack kit we pretty much have the same things, except instead of formula packets I have canned formula. There is also a larger first aid kit, dog food, emergency radio, and no sunscreen.
Making these emergency kits helped curb a little of the anxiety I was having about earthquakes and tornadoes. They make me feel a little more prepared, even though I'm guessing we'll never use them.
I plan on keeping the emergency kits up to date, by switching diapers, formula, and baby food out regularly. The emergency food and water has a 5 year shelf life, so in 5 years I'll replace those things. After researching emergency kits, I've realized that although mine seems slightly excessive, many websites suggest putting much more in your kits! Things like extra clothes and shoes for each family member, knifes, duct tape, candles, etc. Andy would probably pass out if he saw me assembling huge emergency kits in monster duffel bags, so I'm going keep my kits small and pray that we never need to use them in the first place!

Oh Betsy - I hope you never have to use those emergency kits! And having an emergency kit in the car is not a bad idea at all, everyone should have one. I have a small kit in the car, not as elaborate as yours and I know for a fact mine does not have tampons in it. I do not have an emergency kit at home - but we have a basement with water and freezer full of food so I guess maybe that is why I don't get as nervous about a tornado trapping me without these things. Whatever it takes to make you feel more prepared I say do it - although I would agree with Andy that packing outfits and shoes for each of you might be going a little far. Hope you guys are doing great and hope you had a great Easter!
