After having some major stomach issues lately (QSS!) I decided to see a doctor to get this figured out. He suggested I might be lactose intolerant and that I needed to give up lactose for 30 days. Do you know how hard that is for a cheese lover?! Going to Subway and getting no cheese on my sandwich? It's just not right. No Little Caesars. No fettuccine alfredo. No Easy Mac. UGHHHHH. I did good for like 5 days, then over-dosed on cheese over the weekend, and now I've been paying for it every day since. I was starting to worry that I may have a gluten intolerance, and I suppose that would be much worse.
Lactose is in many more foods than I thought...even bread! Right now, I'm only planning on eliminating cheese, milk, eggs, ice cream, yogurt, and any "creamy" foods. So I guess technically I'm going on a low lactose diet. I'm hoping I will notice a difference in my tummy issues soon because I've definitely reached my breaking point.
This will require a lot of self discipline. Wish me luck. I'm going to need it.
Ohhhh pizzzzzzzzzzzzzza. I will miss you.

You will get used to it! My mom became lactose intolerant as an adult too. She still eats cheese - but in moderation. She switched to soy milk which I don't think I could drink but she said you get used to it really quickly. You can do it, after the first few days/weeks it will be no big deal!
Oh Betsy I know what you're going through! I have become pretty much lactose intolerant in the last few years as well. My doc suggested the same trial, to which I only lasted a couple of days. But I found that I didn't ALWAYS feel badly after eating food with lactose. I can eat a little cheese, a small amount of milk in cereal, a yogurt now and then. Anything more than that, I either stay away from or I take a Lactaid pill before I eat. Those pills definitely make a difference.
I hope these 30 days going fast for you and that it helps you figure out what's going on!
It's so common to have issues with dairy. Dan had been really congested lately, more than just typical allergies, and our hippy-dippy chiropractor doctor suggested it could be dairy that's causing him issues. He's really against people drinking cow's milk, he pretty much believes giving it up can fix anything ;) Anyway, so he switched from milk to soy milk, that's it, still eats cheese, ice cream, yogurt, etc. But just doing that, he's seen a huge improvement.
Ugh good luck buddy! You're right, lactose intolerance would be much better than gluten.
Man, is there nothing I can eat. First Mandy's blog about soda and now the thought of not eating cheese and even milk. I thought Milk was really good for you. I'm almost panicking now. Good luck with the no cheese and stuff buddy. I'll be thinking of you.
Ang - milk is really good for you, but there are a lot of people out there that think it's weird that human beings are the only mammals that drink the milk of another species believe it screws with your system.
Still, milk is so good for you, lots of protein, calcium, good fats! So don't give it up unless you're having problems with it or are morally against it. My two cents. =)
You will be fine - my doctor discovered I was lactose intolerant when I was only 7 (after I had months of issues after every school lunch w/ milk - sprinting to the bathroom as a 2nd grader was not cool, not cool at all). I was one of those lucky kids that got to have orange juice for lunch instead of milk. Take that, suckas! There are many lactose free options, such as lactaid and other forms of milk not made from cows. There are also lactaid pills, which help somewhat...I've only recently discovered that my lactose intolerance has lightened up a bit, but not completely (still can't drink a glass of milk w/out sprinting to the bathroom), but pizza and stuff like that I can still tolerate in moderation. Its easier than you think :)
