The Great House Hunt

Oh house hunting.  What can I say?  I thought I would love it, but I'm totally frustrated, annoyed, and actually a little pissed off.  It costs a FORTUNE to live in the Chicago suburbs.  Seriously.  $300,000 gets us a freaking fixer-upper in the town we love.  The farther west you go, the more house you get.  We have found a few cute houses farther west than we originally hoped.  They are both older and need some work.  One of the houses listed for $310,000 has 2 outdated bathrooms (a TEAL bathtub upstairs with matching sinks, and a yellow tub downstairs....YUCK) and a hideous kitchen.  Bathrooms and kitchens would cost a fortune!  I don't think we would be able to resell the house at a price that makes up the money we would put in.  It's seriously CRAZY.  I keep coming back to "if only we lived in Minnesota...".  Ugh.  Less expensive homes and cheaper property taxes.  In the town we love (but can't afford), some areas pay $15,000 per year in taxes!  WTF?!  Why are people okay with this?

We went and saw our 2 favorite houses again yesterday and we are still undecided.  Neither of us like doing work to homes, nor do we have any idea how to.  No one in my immediate family is skilled at this stuff either.  The last 2 homes my dad has lived in have been new constructions.  The house Andy and I currently own was a new construction when we bought it.  We are clueless when it comes to renovating, and I'd really just rather find a house that doesn't need much work.  If you are bored, check homes for sale on Zillow in Elmhurst and then you will see what we are dealing with.

So yeah.  House hunting is currently consuming our time.  We dedicate weekends to seeing houses in person, and weeknights to our online search. What started off as an exciting past-time has turned into a dreaded chore.  We often look at houses in Batavia and Geneva and dream of moving out that way.  They remind us a lot of Woodbury and the homes are gorgeous.  Andy's commute would be well over an hour each way, so that is a major negative.  I caught Andy looking at condos in Chicago.  HAHAHAHAH!  Yes can I PLEASE live in the murder capitol of America with my 2 small children?  I love street parking and taking the bus to Target.  No elevator?  No problem.  I can easily haul my kids, stroller, and shopping bags up 3 flights of stairs. No yard for the kids to play in?  The alley is fine.  No criminals hiding back there.  He wants to live in Chicago, I want to live farther west, we both want to live in Minnesota, and we both want a new house.  We are getting nowhere.

Keep your fingers crossed we find something we both agree on.  So far that seems nearly impossible...but I'm still holding out hope.

I am still holding out hope on the MN thing! Hang in there, keep looking and you will find the perfect home eventually. Don't settle as you will regret that in the future. I know the frustations of home hunting... we started the same process about 2-3 months ago... but we are looking for land and it is appalling how much just a chunk of land costs and then we still have to build a home. We found some nice lots in COttage Grove that are going for $150,000... so that is more than we currently owe on our home. Maybe we could just set up tents and live like Indians on that awesome lot! Ugg, it is frustrating. Hang in there!

Ditto Mandy - you did say you both want to live in MN, didn't you? :)

LOL to your condo comments.

I have never hunted for a new home, but I can imagine how hard it can be. (and will dread it when our time comes). So many options, and yet probably never feeling like the right option. I currently have a 1 hour commute each way, and while it isn't easy or preferential, in many ways the positives in living where we do still outweigh the commute. Could Andy work remotely at all?

Hopefully the perfect place comes along and you soon forget all of this misery with the hunt. My fingers are crossed for you!

By the way, every time I go to my blog feed and glance at your post title, my mind reads it as "The Great Goose Hunt" and I find myself chuckling at the thought of that. :)
